It's clearly a year where everyone is taking a leaf out of Heston's Blumenthal's book and making mince pies with random fillings. Aldi is not one to be left behind with their specially selected black forest mince pies.
I bought these with a little hesitation. Are these actually mince pies or are they just infringing on the good mince pie name to sell yet another type of pie e.g. bramley apple pie. For you readers, I took the plunge so, you don't have to (aren't I nice).
Here's how they look:
Theres barely any mincemeat in it so I'm not going to call it a mince pie. What is in there is just a pureed mincemeat mess surrounding the morello cherries and abundance of chocolate chunks. The pastry is also laced with chocolate making this pie a very sweet pie with a hint of morello cherries cutting through it. Leaving aside the taste the pastry is well baked and the pie is well filled. This will be a pie for those that love chocolate or black forest desserts.
Mince Pie Administration Score: 54 / 100
