Aldi, I nearly forgot Aldi! Frequent winners of the decent mince pie contest by other mince pie reviewers, its time to see what they have. I have picked up these blood orange crumble mince pies as they looked interesting. Yes, i'm back on the alternative mince pie reviews.
Lets see how they look;I almost missed these in store. Certainly not a very Christmassy box but, if you do grab a box of these be sure to keep it upright otherwise most of the crumble top will fall off - as you would expect. I'm not blaming Aldi, it was totally my bad. These were also the first mince pie where extracting them from the foil base was harder than most; and i've been through A LOT.
The pastry base and edges was alright and the crumble top (after i reapplied most of it) was not hugely crumbly but nice and buttery.
With a crumble top there is no hiding a sub-par amount of filling and thankfully, these are filled tto a reasonable level. As for the blood orange mincemeat, you can't really taste it over all the crumble and pastry. If I was presented these without knowing it was a blood orange flavoured mince pie, I would mistake it for a standard mince pie. As I know its blood orange, I can just about taste it - it needed more. Nevertheless, the mincemeat is moist and results in a pleasant mince pie.
If you get these, just be sure to keep the vacuume on standby as no matter how hard i tried, the crumble will go flying, especially taking them out of the foil base.
