Let's see how they look,
The pictures don't do these justice. They are giant and, with 9 in a tray, these make a decent man v food challenge.
This is not a 100% traditional mince pie. You have the pastry base and sides which is thin, a little dense but nice and buttery. That base's primary purpose is to give this pie some structure, as what lies above is the mincemeat and a sponge cake topping. You'd think it shouldn't work but, it does. The cake is a nice, moist vanilla sponge cake. As for the mincemeat, it's nothing special but it's tasty (but on the sweeter side) and a decent quantity thats full of whole currants, raisins and tangy orange peel. To top it all, there is a thick layer of icing sugar on top that just adds to the overall sweetness. A light sprinkle would have been more than enough. You will make a mess while eating these but, you can use it to make your loved ones think you have a problem... :-)
A really great pie, only let down by its presentation and extra high calorie count thanks to its size.
