I've been keen to try all the alternative takes on the regular mince pie this year and so a trip to Tesco to see what they had to offer lead to me finding these spiced rum filled. While I much prefer whiskey, I do tend to enjoy a nice spiced rum and coke every now and again. Hopefully these are better than the Tesco Plant Chef mince pies.
Lets see how they look,Well, i can report that these are better than the Plant Chef version but they are not going to get anywhere near the top spot.
The pastry is soft and stodgy when eaten. Like eating underbaked dough. It gets stuck all over your mouth. Nevertheless, its reasonably seasoned and contains butter. Thankfully its lattice topped so you get slightly less of this mess.
The mincemeat is where the flavour lies. The spiced rum is bold but doesnt slap you in the face like the Asda sloe gin mince pies.It builds up as you eat it. Its a little on the sweeter side for me but some may prefer it. I would have liked more lemon to cut through the sweetness a bit more.
The aftertaste is as if you'd just sipped some very sweet spiced rum, which i guess means you are getting exactly what you expect.
